We're diving into a popular question everyone seems to have in the beauty community - can you really shrink your pores? 

What are pores? 

Pores are small openings in the skin that release oils and sweat. They are largely genetic, however, they can be also affected by 

  • Acne
  • Increased sebum production, which causes oily skin
  • Sun damage
  • Comedogenic makeup

Because pores are determined by genetics, you can't technically shrink them. However, you can decrease their appearance by addressing each of the 4 points above. This article explores our 6 tips to make your pores less visible.

1. Use water-based products

If you already have oily skin, water-based products are the way to go. Oil-based products contain coconut oil, shea butter, jojoba oil, or other types of oil. They can effectively moisturize the skin but are likely not suitable for people with oily skin. The excess oil that collects on the skin can make pores appear larger.

2. Use simple products

If you're using products designed to clear excess oil and sebum, you might be working against yourself. These products rely on active ingredients such as acids to remove the top layers of your skin. This will dry out your skin, leading your pores to look smaller in the short-term. If overused, your sebaceous glands will increase sebum production to replenish the lost moisture, and will lead you back to oily skin. To avoid this, use simple products daily and limit your use of products with active acids. 

3. Wear sunscreen everyday

Yes, every single day. Sunscreen is definitely the most underrated skincare product of all time - especially considering the fact that sun damage is the leading cause of skin cancer and skin aging. Sun damage not only increases your long-term risk of cancer and wrinkles, but it can also dry out your skin and make your pores appear larger. You should be using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to protect your skin. 

4. Remove all traces of makeup every night

Sleeping in makeup overnight causes the pores to become blocked due to a buildup of makeup, oil, and bacteria - we don't want that! Make sure you remove your makeup every night with micellar water and follow up with a gentle cleanser. Remember to stay away from makeup wipes!

5. Use a foaming gel-based cleanser

A foaming gel-based cleanser is great for unclogging pores while removing excess oil and acne-causing bacteria from the surface of your face. These cleansers are gentle, but get the job done! Make sure you stay away from oil-based or alcohol-based cleansers as these can irritate your skin. On another note, make sure you cleanse your skin twice a day to remove the overnight buildup in the morning and remove the buildup throughout the day at night. 

6. Exfoliate weekly

Exfoliation is a great way to remove all the oil, dirt, and bacteria buildup in your pores without over-stripping your skin. You only need one to two exfoliation treatments each week.
